Knees can be tricky animals. I've only ever had a couple of "phantom" knee issues (my R knee just started aching one day, making me go up and down stairs backwards ... and the pain went away just as insidiously as it began. Never did figure it out but blessed it hasn't happened again.), but pretty much I just count myself fortunate. Between my mom and my aunt, they've had a total of nine knees. One of the reasons I started running was to take off some extra weight so that I could hopefully avoid some of those potentially inherited issues.

But take heart! Hubby had some more serious knee things going on last winter/spring training as he was getting ready to run his first marathon. It ached him terribly whenever we would run more than 4 or 5 miles ... a significant downer when you're trying to ramp up in mileage. However, we had already signed up to run the Cherry Blossom 10 miler in DC in April and he was DETERMINED to run it (run the whole thing) ... and he did! Ran through the knee pain (which would NOT have been my advice to him, by the way). He told me later that it taught him something about enduring. Thankfully, he didn't injure himself further (which really would have been a bummer for the marathon training plan). Instead, he/we just took it easy on the long slow distances (LSDs) and walked whenever he needed to. He completed his first marathon in May last year (woohoo!). He took about three weeks off running after that and hasn't had a twinge of knee pain since.

Like I said, I would NOT have recommended that he continue to run through the pain and, of course, I wanted him to see a doc ... but he IS a guy and all. It sounds to me like you're doing the right thing by, yes, seeing a doc, and also taking it easy. Your fitness "outside of running" is important and will most definitely be important after you've gotten doc clearance and head out to the roads or the treadmill in the weeks to come.

You're smart and it's sounding like you've got a plan. Dream BIG! It could happen!

So do you have your sights on any particular half marathon this year? Did you run last year's alone or with friends? I visited your blog but didn't have too much time to this morning. Will read farther back when I get a few extra.

I started out running only 8 years ago or so and began with half marathons. I ran three before I worked up the nerve to even enter a marathon. Seems crazy to think that way now. My hubby just started running, oh, about two years ago, and it was his idea to run the ultra. It was amazing, though! Marathons are very, very cool and I SOOOO love the training that gets to the race. So much life application! But the training for the ultra was simply different. I'll have to see if I can condense it down and post it on my blog sometime. Some is there but it tends to be more current stuff.

Let me know about your half thoughts.

Oh, wait. Did that get to you, Kate? Duh.

Gosh. I wish I knew how to drive this thing! I want to post a message to Kate but can't seem to get beyond comments!

Welcome to the Lounge! I can feel your energy through your profile. If you want to give some energy to another Lounger, drop by Dodie's profile - she is just starting to run and hopes to lose weight. If you want to pick up some energy, stop by roadrunnerchick - she has just started to do ultras (I see that is a future goal for you).

Hi Kate, Welcome to the Lounge!

You've accomplished a lot with your different forms of health and fitness. Congrats on completing your first half. Amy and I love half marathons. You'll find plenty of other HM runners here too.

When you make the step up to the full marathon, that will be a transforming experience too.

We're glad you're here!
