As the SW Florida 5K 2007-2008 season comes to an end I am finishing my second year of middle and long distance competition. Mostly 5ks with my first 2 half marathons (one trail – 1:54, one road – 1:40) thrown in for good luck.
Looking forward this summer to my second 12 week base-building program and I feel very fit and uninjured going into the Spring-Summer. In fact, staying injury free (since I stretched ligaments in my left knee doing bridge repeats last November, 2007) is allowing me to re-coop most of the lost momentum.
My current PR at 5K is 19:54 running consistently in the 19:54 to 20:29 range. My goal for this session was the middle 19:00s or better.
The knee injury affected practices and 5Ks involving bridges. My PR for the season came running Mid-Point Bridge 5K a week after the knee injury while I was still in my best condition. So I am very optimistic I can achieve my goal in the remaining 3 races of my season (as of 03/20/2008).
Starting in April I plan to do 6 to 10 weeks of resistance, kick boxing, biking, swimming and trail running. In June I will start my running program for the 2008-2009 5K season. This year I am emphasizing “PACE”.
As a sprinter and racquetball player most of my life I have a tendency to surge and retreat instead of maintaining a steady pace. I’m getting more consistent this season but I still need to work on it.
Finally, I found “ice” during the last several months. In Pennsylvania for my whole life ice caused cramping and therefore no relief. Here in Florida I can use it daily with only occasional cramps but loads of daily relief from sore, fluid congested legs. I plan to train harder than ever – Who knew!
Besides 5Ks, I will do the Ruts-n-Ruts and Disney World half marathons in December, 2008 and January, 2009, respectively.
Enough about me – what’s going on with you.
My current PR at 5K is 19:54 running consistently in the 19:54 to 20:29 range. My goal for this session was the middle 19:00s or better.
I run anywhere from 20 to 45 miles a week with a lot of 800, 1200 and 1 mile repeats. I include a Sunday long run of 7 to 12 miles.
Pace is my weakness. Running PACE allow is tough for me. I manage to maintain pace up to 7:30 before I start varing 4 to 6 per quarter mile (16 to 24 seconds a mile.)
When running with others I still do mini-surges.
I put a lot of miles on grass (6 to 10 per week.)
I do not have any running logs yet.
