I am newly returned to running after many years of sedentariness. However, after the birth of my first child my choices came down to becoming a shapeless blob or getting my butt in gear. I'm choosing the second option. The irony, of course, is that I had all the time in the world before Sophie (the daughter) was born and never bothered to run. Now I have to really struggle to find 15 minutes without a chore or a child attached to me. But you know what? I'm doing it. I can't tell you how many times over the past 10 years I have tried to get myself back into running and failed. But this time, despite the comparatively daunting challenges I am succeeding. So here to the miles falling away behind me.
I ran my first 5K this past weekend in 41 minutes. It may not have been fast, but I finished it and ran all of it. It was a little embarrassing though. I turn red when even moderately taxed and I was giving pretty hard at the end. While I know everyone on the sidelines was encouraging everyone in the race I have to admit I kinda took the "don't give up. You're almost there." a little personally. I couldn't help thinking to myself "I'm think I'm gonna throw up and even if I don't, I'm certain I'm gonna pee on myself. But, who said anything about giving up?" Thats kind of my style. I just keep plodding along. There is another race next weekend and I am gonna try to best 41 minutes (even if only by 30 seconds!)
