RE: Introduce yourself!

Hi Group,

My name is Steve and I am a former college athlete that has always wanted to run a marathon and feel as though I will need the expertise, experience and support of other runners.
I live in the Boston Metro area and am interested in a training partner(s) that take fitness and nutrition fairly serious.

I currently run 30 miles a week comfortably.

I look forward to meeting new people and learning more about this addictive sport.

Best regards,
Steve

Hi! Frank. I have been running for a year now and am training for my second half marathon next month. I find motivation in the fact that I keep my weight down and that I can still have icecream after every run! Silly but true. I also find motivation through reading books about running such as Born to run and Chi Running. I have recently started asking around about inspirational movies that I could watch and have been given the names of some such as, loneliness of a long distance runner, Spirit of the marathon, and with out limits. Oh.. and Chariots of fire. I think what keeps me running is that my brother in law is dying of ALS and he can no longer move so I dedicate avery run to him.

Hello Frank, I have been running for almost two years now and I love it. I have not been doing much trainig lately and need to start back my last race was a 10k in June. I want to do a 1/2 marathon, but I really need a good training plan because the race is in November I want to be more than half way ready to do this! 13.1 is more than I have ever done!! I need to know what motivates you the most to keep running the way you do? It is always on my mind when I get up and when I lay down at night!! I just can't get back to training I don't know maybe it is a mental thing right now.
Any advive would be helpful.

I have been follow ing the Higdon methon but I have heard that the fartlek method is good for speed. Many of the runners in runnersrule.com talk about differant methods of speed trainging. You should check there as well as here.

Hello everybody;
My name is really Francis but most call me Frank.I have been running for over 30 yrs. and still am able to compete well in my age group.Running fits well with my physiology and I do not get too many aches and pains. I run 4-5 days a week and do some weight lifting.I am recently into the "Pose" technique of running and it makes a lot of sense to me.One of my favorite finishes in all the world is Billy Mills finish in the 10K at the 1964 olympics! ( Check it out on youtube)Everybody's dream!
I've run everything from 1/2 marathon on down but cross country and the 10K are my favorites. I'm looking to get faster, so if anyone has any suggestions for training,I would welcome them.
Thank you.

I run 30-45 minutes after waking up. As mentioned, drinking water is important. I will often eat a couple of rice cakes just to have something in my stomach and also have a piece of hard candy. Lower energy level in the morning may be due to lower glucose levels in the body.

RE: FREE Stuff Giveaway: Spirit of the Marathon DVDs

I am researcher and I am drawn to marathon and longer distances because I am always searching for that eureka moment. It has always been the scientist in me. As scientists, we are well aware that drug discovery and development is a marathon, not a race. We know science is a slow process, but they are pushed forward day after day believing that the ultimate dividends could be big. In this regard, long-distance running is a metaphor to me. Like most marathoners, I do it because I love the challenge, and believe that the journey of self-discovery is worth it. And, when we cross the finish line, we become untouchable and enter a world where fathers and mothers, sons and daughters, live normal, full lives without untimely interruptions by grievous disease. Yet, the so-called finish line is just a facade and the world is not perfect. There is no finish line is life; it keeps on running. And so must we.

RE: Early Morning Running

Runnng within a few minutes of getting up doesn't work for me either. My energy level is low and I feel very lethargic. If I'm running early (usually because the temperature is headed to 90 and I want to get done sooner), I drink about 12 oz. of water when I first get up and I eat one or two energy bars. Then I do some exercises to wake up my legs, primarily easy lunges and knee bends. I also walk for the first few minutes at a brisk pace to get my breathing going. That seems to help. Also, for every five degrees that the temperature exceeds 60, I slow my pace by 30 seconds per mile. Endurance rather than speed is what is important to me.

Early Morning Running

The past 3 weeks, the only time I've been able to train is at 5:00 AM. At first, I was running great keeping the same pace as my evening runs. But lately, it seems to take every ounce of energy I have to propel my legs forward. My pace has dropped by about 20 seconds per mile and it's a bit discouraging. I've been even getting more sleep than usual but I still have no energy.

Does anyone else run early in the morning and maybe have some advice?? Thanks!

RE: Introduce yourself!

Hi everyone!
I'm Robin and I'm from Scranton, PA. I was an athlete back in high school, but I recently got back into running about a year and a half ago after a 6 year layoff! Back then I took running for granted, and after not being able to run even a mile for 6 years, I forced myself to get back into it. It was the best thing I could have done for myself.

In the past 18 months, I competed in several races (including my first marathon), set new 5k and 5 mile PRs, and even placed first in my age group! My ultimate running goal is to qualify for the Boston Marathon and I'm hoping to accomplish that at the Steamtown Marathon in October!
