RE: Garmin or something else

I also have the Garmin 205 and have been pleased with it. It's big, but that's OK because the display numbers are very easily read. I did not get the 305 because I have a pacemaker and there's a risk that an HRM could interfere with it. My son does have the 305 and has been happy with it.

I use mine on every run and download it into my laptop. The downside is that unless it is fully charged, it takes a very long time to find satellites when I turn it on, so I recharge it after every use by leaving it plugged into the USB port. I take it outside and put it on the driveway for five minutes so it's ready when I am.

RE: Garmin or something else

I've been running with a Garmin 50 for almost a year. It's accurate to 1/100th of a mile, far more accurate than any of the GPS running apps on the iPhone (and I've tested them all). I don't know if Garmin's GPS watches are more accurate than the iPhone 3GS's GPS so I haven't made that move. I just recommended a friend to try the FR60 which replaced the 50 and he's very happy with it.

RE: cdreisbach

I think one thing to keep in mind is it isn't necessary to run every run with a partner. Once a week, or even every 2 weeks is fine.

Pace is the challenge, invariably one of you will be faster than the other - as long as the difference isn't too great a divide, it shouldn't be an issue.

I started running (again) daily in late September, and also have started looking at ways to augment my runs. Joining a track club or finding a like minded partner is on my list.

RE: cdreisbach

Having a running partner is a great way to stay motivated - the only issue I've found is that it's hard to find one with the same goal, so we often wan to do different kinds of workouts on any given day. I'd also suggest checking out some local running clubs. Most running stores have a club and/or can tell you about the ones in the area. Most running clubs have a wide variety of paces/distances...I'm in a thursday night running club - which is nice because it ensures that I get in a decent longer mid-week run.

Good luck - and keep on running!!

Not sure if I'll ge around to following through and submitting an entry, but the Illinois Marathon had the best race shirt I think I've ever gotten - long sleeve, technical, with a 1/4 zip in the front - great for late fall/early spring training. It was also a GREAT race if anyone is interested - I can't run it this spring, but will definitely be back to that race!

Goals....

Hi all...

Just wondering if anybody else has tips to reaching goals.

I ran the RnR Phoenix 1/2, and did much better than I expected. Not better than I felt capable of exactly, but way faster than I expected.

Now I'm re-evaluating my possibilities - primarily short term.

Through some fun prodding, a friend and I have been challenging each other.

I've had a few runs since the 1/2, along with some new demands I'm putting on myself, and just feeling flat.

It seemed easier before the 1/2. Now it seems like more work - even to just do the same training I did before the 1/2.

I'm early in my tweaking - but just looking for other input into how you have found success in getting your mind around a more aggressive daily workout.

RE: hello

I am a step mother to an 18 year old. He went off to college this year but up until then his events took all my time. He was on the swim tema, Water polo and Judo. I was spinning out of control for 6 years with his comitments, but was glad to do it or him. I hae been getting up at 4:15AM every morning for a long time to get anythng done. Now it's my work out time. It's off to the gym by 4:30AM six days a week in the winter and in the spring, summer and fall I'm out the door three day a week to run. The only time I miss it is when I have to go to work early for meeting before my office opens. Strollers are great and it gives you time with your kids, as well as giving them a basis for healthy living. Start them young and they will be healthy all their life. Find a way to include them in your work out or start a walking running plan for them to get them involve in working out and living healthy.

Which Race had the Best T-Shirt in 2009?

Race t-shirts. Most runners love them. Some can do without them. Regardless of your point of view, I want to find the best one of 2009. So we're holding the first ever Biz Runner contest. I want you to email a photo or jpeg of what you think is the best race shirt you received last year. Everyone who submits an entry will be entered for the chance to win a free pair of Brooks running shoes! See the entry details below.

We've touched on the subject of race t-shirts before, for more on that see here: http://www.thebizrunner.com/2009/12/would-you-give-up-your-race-t-shirt-to.html)

Like the marathon medal, the race t-shirt is a key piece in the marketing of any event. A great t-shirt gets proudly worn ? time and time again. A bad t-shirt gets stashed in a draw never to see the light of day, assuming it isn?t so horrible that it?s discarded immediately.

In local races the t-shirts often have the names of multiple local sponsors. It?s a great way for a company to show its support for the community. I would think that offering to put a companies name on shirt is a strong selling point. It?s great advertising to know that the hundreds or thousands of people that run the race will be getting a shirt with your companies name on it - but this assumes people will actually wear the shirt. I?ve often wondered what the numerous sponsors think when they see their name on a bad t-shirt??yikes I paid for that?...no one will ever wear these?.

On the other hand, A GREAT t-shirt is hard to part with. I have one shirt in particular that I?ve worn out and just HATED to retire it. To this day I can?t bring myself to throw it away. The logo is a piece of really cool artwork and immediately grabs your attention. There are admittedly a few other things at play beyond just being a great looking shirt. The shirt is a reminder of a fantastic vacation weekend spent in one of my favorite cities. It?s a reminder of a race that while difficult, was one of my best. Put all these factors together and I love this shirt.

I want to know what shirts were given out in 2009 that you LOVE. The shirts that you?ll wear until they are so threadbare you just can?t wear them any more. Or maybe it?s a shirt you like so much you won?t wear it at all because you just can?t part with it.

I want to see the shirts that really stand out from a crowd. Of course we all know that art is totally subjective. So is this contest. Keep in mind that I?m not ?The Art Runner? or ?The Graphic Design Runner? ? I?m looking at the t-shirt as a marketing opportunity. All I will say is that I think a great t-shirt needs to capture the spirit of a race, as well as the city or location it is run in. See it?s totally subjective. In addition to picking what I consider to be the best one - I?ll highlight some of the other great ones as well. Then you can tell me I?m why I?m wrong.

How to Enter:
To enter, simply email The Biz Runner at thebizrunner@gmail.com by 11:59PM (EST) Sunday, January 31st. Be sure to put "Best T-Shirt of 2009" in the email's subject line and put your name in the body of the email. Include a pic of your t-shirt or a jpeg of the race logo. It has to be the official race shirt - the one you received as part of your entry fee. Not something you bought at an expo. Tell me the name of the race, the city it was run in and the date it was run. A brief line about WHY you like this particular shirt is preferred but optional. Everyone who sends a submission will be entered to win a free pair of Brooks shoes. (Thanks Brooks!)

Each email will be assigned a number based on the order that the emails are received which will be used to determine the winner of the Brooks shoes (not the winner of the "best t-shirt contest, that's subjective and decided by The Biz Runner - see above). The winning number will be selected by The True Random Number Generator at Random.org . The winner of the best race shirt of 2009 will be announced the first week of February. The winner of the free shoes will be announced at the same time.

Ciri:

Since you're training for a spring HM, go the the new "2010 Training and Races" thread and put down the race you're training for. Sneakersister will add you to the list. We did this last year for our 2009 HMs ("Half Marathon, Full Challenge") and did periodic posts about our training. We also did a post-race summary, either in that thread or in "Race Results".

I'm in NE Illinois and our high temps are in the teens, maybe similar to yours in Michigan. If we get to the upper 20s or so, I may try getting outside.

I'm the author of a great weight maintenance book http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Within-Matt-Hackney/dp/0981817459 - The Fire Within.

It teaches about nutrition, training, and motivation. I come from a running background and train my clients for running, so I definitely recommend it to anyone on this site.

RE: Introduce yourself!

Hi! I'm Ciri and I started running in August. I'm 40 and I have been heavy all my life until this year. I started running as part of my weight loss program along with weight training and core. I really like running and have already ran a 5K and a 10K. I'm training for a 1/2 marathon in the spring. I was looking for a running partner for when the weather is better and wouldn't you know that my massage theripist asked me if I would run with him when the weather is better. Small would isn't it! I just hope he isn't to fast for me!
